Cicada at Wharf 2 Theatre

OUR REVIEW HERE

#sydney The kids and I headed into the city yesterday to see Cicada at @sydneytheatreco's Wharf 2 theatre. This very clever production is based on Shaun Tan's picture book CICADA, which won Best Picture Book in 2019 by the Children's Book Council Award. When Miss spotted the posters when we arrived at the theatre, she was very excited to realise she had read and loved the book which made the experience even more exciting!

The small stage, set and props should not be underestimated as the duo performers and puppeteers Arielle Gray & Tim Watts are as clever as can be with so many tricks up their sleeve! The story of a small cicada working away in a small office, overworked and unloved was brought to life through clever use of props, light, sound and a clever way of showing motion! There sure are some vary creatives in this world!

Be sure to checkout this show before it finishes soon! Kids can also colour in their Cicada before or after the show and leave it on the tree. Allow time before the show to find the theatre. There is parking nearby and cafés, plus it's a short walk to Circular Quay.

The show is recommended for kids aged 8 years+ which I think is appropriate as younger kids may not grasp some abstract concepts. I do agree it is perfect for adults too as some themes relate to work and social expectations, it was quite funny actually. I also found that some parents and couples without children enjoyed the show just as much as the kids. The show has haze effects and flashing lights. CICADA is on now until the 13th October, so don't miss it.

A moving tale of self-discovery for all the family

“Cicada tell story. Story good. Story simple. Story even human can understand. Tok! Tok! Tok!”

Cicada spends his days dutifully working away in a grey office. Overlooked by his superiors and overworked by his colleagues, he is getting very close to the end of his tether. But one day, looking out over the city from the rooftop of his office building, Cicada has an epiphany.

Winner of the Children’s Book Council Award for Best Picture Book in 2019, this new adaptation brings master-storyteller Shaun Tan’s much-loved CICADA to life in a stunning puppet show, presented by Sydney Theatre Company and created by one of Australia’s premier children’s theatre companies – Barking Gecko Theatre.

A small story of epic proportions, Cicada is an allegory of difference, resilience and the light we all have inside ourselves. Children and adults will love this enchanting tale about finding one’s place in the world.
