#sydney Review - We enjoyed visiting the Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine exhibition some time ago at the @mca_australia. As a keen photographer myself, this was a very interesting exhibition and it made me wish I still captured in black & white and processed in a dark room! Hence why I turned some of my photos in this post in black & white. This is the first survey of the artist’s work in Australia which brings almost 100 pieces of work from 1970s to today. Sugimoto will make you believe he photographed artists like Princess Diana or Salvator Dalí as he excels in the art of photography. The kids liked his collection of photos of wildlife and nature, set up almost as nature morte. My favourite pieces were his collection of Theaters where he used long exposures to capture a full-length film in a single photographic take. I was in awe with this collection and appreciated a couple of photographers explaining me the process. His Sea of Buddhas of the 1001 gilded wooden statues of Kannon from a 12th Century Buddhist Temple in Kyoto has inspired me to go back to Kyoto and seek this temple! And finally his Lightning Fields images were just stunning where Sugimoto created dramatic images by exposing photo film to electrical currents produced by a 400,000-volt generator! An impressive artist - Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine is on at the MCA until 27th October 2024. #hosted #invited #mca #museumofcontemporaryartsydney #hiroshisugimoto #hiroshisugimototimemachine
Time Machine by Hiroshi Sugimoto brings together over 100 artworks and includes rarely-seen pieces from the photographer's own collection alongside works from the Odawara Art Foundation.
Hiroshi Sugimoto is renowned for creating some of the most recognisable images of our time. This major survey is the largest exhibition of the artist’s work to date and his first major survey in the Southern Hemisphere.
The survey includes key works from all of the artist’s major series, including Seascapes, Theaters, Dioramas, Portraits, Sea of Buddha, Architecture, Conceptual Forms, Lightning Fields and Opticks.
Time Machine highlights Sugimoto’s philosophical yet playful inquiry into our understanding of time, memory and perception, blurring the boundaries between the real, surreal and the abstract.
